Primer on Microbial Genomics cont'd

Why Are There Government Programs? Why Not Industry?

Private industry invests in microbial genomics research which is focused on commercial development. Many of the commercial projects include research on pathogens, enzyme production, and probiotics. Research not expected to be commercially viable is not likely to be funded by the private sector. In addition, data generated by privately funded research may not be publicly available. Therefore, research funded by government agencies for selected microbe genomics and proteomics is essential.

Education and training also will be supported by public-sector research, as will discussions about the ethical, legal, and social issues involved in any genomics research. For education-related material, see our Education page.
